Microsoft just announced at Build 2016, the developer edition of SQL Server 2014 that is free for Visual Studio Dev Essentials members. SQL Server Developer Edition is for development and testing only, and not for production environments or for use with production data. The next version of SQL Server, SQL Server 2016 Developer edition that will be released later this year will also be free.

The news was announced at the event and also via a blog posted by Tiffany Wissner, Senior Director of Data Platform Marketing.
